Since we're coming up on a Mercury retrograde on December 26th that will turn direct on January 15th and most people cringe at the retrogrades I thought I'd post those for 2010 and some more positive insights to transmute the negative conceptions so many of us hold.
Here is a list of the retrogrades for 2010 and following that will be my comments on how you can make use of them. Included are the astrological associations for those of you who work with astrology. I'm not profuse in it so I won't be addressing that influence.

THE POSITIVE SIDE OF MERCURY RETROGRADES
Do you remember being a kid and drinking soda through a straw, then blowing back into the straw to make bubbles? That reverse air going into the straw is like the wind of Mercury blowing through our lives. It creates turbulence in our minds because all action seems to reverse itself and we can't get anywhere-or so it seems. If we get stuck in that mindset our minds begin to embrace frustration, our emotions get involved, and we feel out of sorts. But, if we transmute that conceptualizing into something more positive we can make use of these retrograde periods and make a lot of personal progress. Each retrograde cycle tends to run about three weeks with this retrograde energy at play impacting our lives and traditionally that impact has implications we all need to contend with worldwide…implications that have us feeling very relieved once it goes direct again. But what can we do productively while it's in retrograde motion? After all, the world doesn't stop functioning just because Mercury is influencing things, it merely distorts activity for a period of time. I'd like to discuss that briefly. (?) LOL
Traditional implications tell us that Mercury is the ruler of communication and when in retrograde influence communication 'backs up'…messages are missed or not delivered on time, appointments are delayed or missed, communicating thoughts is often accompanied by indecision, muddled thoughts, hesitations, incorrect assumptions, misinterpretations, misspoken statements etc. are profuse. It's recommended to check all written documents for errors, to take extra care in making important decisions, to confirm and re-confirm appointments or anything else that could be complicated by this energy at play on private and career levels. Where your concerns may be around contracts, major purchases, starting new projects etc. at this time, it is advised against as they tend to fall apart, equipment and machines fail to function properly and getting the warranty work done usually runs into complications or it doesn't get honored for some reason. This includes the all important internet bugs, computer crashes, electrical failures and cell phone issues coming into play so back up your files now.
We run into all sorts of unforeseen problems and waiting patiently will allow us to avoid bringing them into our lives…that or if we ignore the warnings we invite the dramas to unfold. Things go wrong or turn out far different than we expected with headaches attached so it's no wonder that there is apprehension when retrogrades hit…many of the stories are nightmares for people and they hit us hard in many cases. Avoiding the impact of disappointment is done by anticipating that whatever is begun is going to change in a major way somehow and then prepare for those changes, snags, upsets or avoid beginning any projects entirely until the cycle completes itself. Patience is indeed a virtue when Mercury goes retro.
Mercury also rules travel in all its guises so we should expect delays, conveyance breakdowns (mechanical failures), long waiting lines and congested traffic, schedules being off, roads being blocked, we get lost on the way somewhere, forget where we parked our car, all sorts of things run amok causing frustration with the hectic pace of 'getting there' and stress can mount quickly. Remember, Mercury rules communication and that includes our thoughts too so everything can go haywire all at once. Nothing seems clear and we can become quite forgetful ourselves. Those suitcases may be missing important items if we're traveling, or we may rush out of the house leaving things we intended to bring with us behind and not discover that until we arrive at our destination all frazzled.
If we let our schedules go and relax through the cycle things don't seem so chaotic. That way you're not spending time and energy chasing your tail-or someone else's. Pay attention when your driving, extra attention and drive defensively to avoid accidents…remain aware as this is not a time to let your mind wander behind the wheel. Mercury retro has its benefits too, it's a great time to de-stress, to take a time-out for ourselves, relax, and take a 'me day' whenever you can during this period. If you're in a safe place let your mind wander, go ahead and daydream or find some way to disconnect from the rest of the world for a bit and get back to yourself. Whatever you wish to do, do make it a relaxing experience for yourself. Those who have a horoscope ruled by Mercury are going to feel the impact all the stronger so do take note of that as your lives can get even more chaotic than the lives of others.
Retrograde periods are wonderful for finishing up projects, attending to details, and cleaning out the junk we acquire. Maybe you want to paint a room, clear out cupboards and closets, or go through those boxes in storage. Maybe you want to do some deep cleaning or window washing, why not? You'll be undisturbed even if 10 people said they would call, odds are they will forget or become distracted. It's a quiet time to get things done that have nothing to do with others…things you can rely on yourself to do. Catching up on things you have neglected because you didn't have the time before is possible now. That time is granted by Mercury, and you know it allows you three weeks and then some…about 5 days before it goes retrograde the effects start to be felt and on the day it goes retro the impact hits the strongest…it takes up to 5 more days after it goes direct so we actually get about a month here. Check your 'to do list' and organize your office or home, it's a great period for that sort of work. You may even feel that projects you had begun are no longer worth your time and discard them as not being viable for good, or you'll redo the plans and turn them into something better.
It's an excellent time to practice going with the flow and mastering that for yourself. Now, you're going to want to be very observant as well because unexpected twists and turns will come into the currents of energy at play. Like floating down a river, there are eddies and still spots along the way too, places where deceits and deceptions are revealed, places where the current exposes suddenly or stills completely as the truth comes out. These insights can be brought about by a slip of the tongue, by apparent 'accidental' reveals or discoveries as we trip across information or validations that we've been misled somehow. People are revealed for who they are or what they've done and it can be very insightful if you keep your eyes and ears open so you are able to take that information and apply it to your path in life and the relationships it holds. Now, these things can be shocking and even hurtful at first, but if you flow with the insight and don't engage your emotions you can see where it's time to avoid more of that in the future and adjust appropriately insuring you do just that.Retrograde is also a powerful time for going within to look into the Great Smoking Mirror, the deep internal journey work, and you can expect plenty of ah-ha moments there. Working on yourself is a key factor you can take full advantage of. Everything else in life is going to slow down or miss the mark so you may as well make use of the free time when nothing seems to be happening as planned. Use if for yourself, my friends, and take advantage of the positive side that most people ignore.
