The editor is kinda touch and go for some platform/browser combinations. Can you tell me which browser and browser version you're using and on which platform (XP, Vista, MacOS) that is?

The square brackets are considered 'bb code', and are used in the quick reply. The < and > brackets are for html and both bbcode and html can be used in the 'full editor' that you see when you click on 'add reply' rather than using the quick reply.

The best way to avoid losing the breaks if you need to edit, is to consistently use the 'add reply' button, or hit 'reply' below each post and to avoid the quick reply, particularly for longer posts/replies that have a higher chance of needing editing. That way the browser/operating system doesn't interfere with the bbcode/html issue.

Ah. Okay. Google Chrome doesn't work well with the wysiwyg editor. What you could do if you prefer Chrome, is click on 'account' in the top bar, then on 'preferences' in the 'settings' box, and then at the bottom, select 'bbcode' as your preferred editor. It will help with how Chrome deals with html in the editor.
