The Next Generation-s |

I just had lunch with the newscaster on cable. They were talking about the huge deficit we are leaving to the next generation because of the economic downfall
nationally and globally. It had me pinging to the wisdom of Native teachings I've heard so many times: we are responsible for the next seven generations.
This perception is honored in every way you can think of from what we've done in the past, what we do today, and where we are going in the future. It got
me thinking, the echoes of 7 generations still bounding around in my mind. What do you think the legacy of today will bring them, and how do you feel your path
will effect that?

Personally I believe that the next generation will have the creativity to deal with what's happening. They're already moving into a new way of
thinking, a new awareness, a different interaction between the left and right brain hemispheres, a different approach. A book that gave me a lot of confidence
in the next generation(s) is "A Whole New Mind" by Daniel
Pink. There are already adults and young adults who are showing 'the way' and there are so many young folks who are demanding a new way. I have no
doubt they'll get challenged, or run into challenges that aren't easily or readily overcome, but I also see their determination to make it right. Some
only see what's wrong, others are looking beyond that to also see what can be done.
If the human race was so fragile that the next generation couldn't deal with the legacy of their forebears, we'd have not made it this far. I am seeing many parents around me already bring an increased awareness of the issues that we face to their children. I see teens making decisions that make me proud. I see young adults starting businesses that are sustainable, and demanding sustainable items and recycling 'experienced' goods. They are changing the market one demand at a time. I find it helpful too to remember that 'critical mass' is not 51%, but around 5%. We're closer to reaching critical mass than we think - we may have already even achieved it without being aware of it. |

Why should an economic downfall be a burden? Personally it feels like a blessing, even though it does give me the odd "white hair" moment of panic.
That's on a personal level only - only a "big picture" level it feels very needed and very healthy.
As for the future children. I suspect they will teach us the new ways we need to exist in a very new world. "If you have tried to do something and failed, you are vastly better off

To me the economic downfall is the destruction of the old and dysfunctional making way for the new so I agree with you both. The next generation is indeed
aware, learning and being prepared to deal with what awaits them. It is amazing to see how aware they are. Each generation is like that though, isn't it? I
mean they are left to clean up the mess of the last one in many ways. Left to improve and evolve with what the last generation may have seen as the monster
under the bed in some cases and make it better. It's all a physical apparition of the Change IMHO.
In my initial questions my thoughts were based on the news caster's comments because they seemed so negative. (By the way, I didn't sit with him personally, he was on television in case anyone got the wrong impression. ) I prefer to hold a more positive and optimistic outlook than that, and hope to be holding proper space for the generations to come. It's through
the bigger picture of life evolving...a natural cycle regardless of how ugly it gets at times, that my curiosity was raised. In the critical mass concept, what
we believe and work toward affects that mass and feeds it. That doesn't mean it's a simple thing, there is complexity to it if we stand in the middle.
If we stand back we get a clearer picture of what we needs to be done and how we can do it. That's what led to my question about what, as individuals, we
were doing to help them.
