The national conference, which would include thousands of people from around the world, was to be held in the gigantic convention center. Quite frankly, I was anxious, nervous, and somewhat afraid of New York City. There were just too many people there. It was too crowded and too crazy for me. I was not impressed at all, but decided to participate for public relations reasons and to promote my new book, Native Healer. Anyway, John and I were down in the hotel lobby and I had just smudged myself with "Grizzly Bear Root" (Angelica herb) for protection as part of a ritual I use for dealing with stress and anxious situations.
I went down to the lobby to look for John. He caught me talking to a large Beetle-type bug that I had suddenly seen run in from nowhere and snatch a smaller bug that was near the front doof of the lobby. I think he was embarrassed by my behavior and reacted accordingly, but I could tell that he was also curious.
So I told him what I had just seen. i told him that it was an omen, a messenger from Nature. I also told him that I felt uneasy about the place and its location, and I didn't really care to venture out to go sightseeing. I felt something bad was about to happen. I told John that the bug scenario was a warning that someone we knew might get robbed or hurt. Well, as things turned out, the editor of our company was just getting out of a taxi at the front door of the hotel when all of a sudden a man ran up, pushed her back into the taxi, snatched her purse, and fled down the street, all within a few minutes. She lost everything but luckily didn't get hurt.

During the nineteenth century, in East Anglia, whooping cough was said to be cured by suspending a beetle around a child's neck.
