I've worked with cards for well over 45 years and have found that size, shape, as well as their images vary so much. You can buy them manufactured or make your own, so trimming them comfortably to fit your hands will have no impact on the messages or the quality of your readings. Leaving them uncomfortably large will cramp your hands (I've got small hands myself) and gets quite painful.

What will impact them is the way you store and work with them. I recommend a piece of amethyst kept with them in a small cedar box, a little pouch, or even sitting atop the deck when not in use. The more you use them the greater the connection to you becomes and your accuracy will improve.

I don't know what deck you're working with but I use the Rider Tarot deck in the 'pocket' size. They are just slightly smaller than a regular deck of playing cards and easily slip into one's pocket or purse if you're on the go. I love them as I read professionally in my office and their size accommodates layouts on my keyboard tray very nicely. I have several other decks too, but these are my mainstay. You can order the pocket size at most booksellers or online if you're interested. Hope that helps a little.
