From: The Encyclopedia of Native American Religions by Arlene Hirschfelder and Paulette Molin

GHOST DANCE OF 1870
A religious movement that originated among the Northern Paiute of the Walker River Reservation in Navada and was founded by the prophet Wodziwob. In the late 1860's he made a number of prophecies, including the resurrection of the dead and the restoration of the conditions that existed before Europeans arrived in the region. The movement arose among the Paiute people at a time of great suffering and deprivation. Besides losing their traditional landbase and means of subsistence, other calamities had occurred, including a drought, starvation and epidemics.

Elements identified with the Ghost Dance included curing and increase rites, practice of traditional Paiute Round Dance as a vehicle for the movement and an attempt to introduce the Cry Dance, a mourning ceremony to the Walker River people. "American Indians sometimes call ourselves People of the Land and we call our cousins of the plant kingdom Standing Ones or Standing People. Our beautiful
cousins were given special status as providers and givers by the Creator. Some provide shelter and others give food to their animal, plant and insect

Standing Ones pray as they lift their arms upward in eternal praise and thanks to the Creator. The Standing People are forever connected to the Mother Earth

Their bodies become home to many animals, birds and insects.

Thank you for this contribution, Paah.

The Laws of Magic
Excerpted from Authentic Thaumaturgy by P.E.I Bonewits

The Laws of Magic are not legislative laws, but, like those of physics or musical harmony, are actually fairly practical observations that have been
accumulated over thousands of years. These laws describe the way magic seems to behave.

The LAW OF KNOWLEDGE
This is probably the most widely used law, and probably encompasses all the others in some way. The basis of this law is that understanding brings control. The
more that is known about a subject, the easier it is to exercise control over it. Knowledge is power.

The LAW OF SELF-KNOWLEDGE
An obvious derivative of the LAW OF KNOWLEDGE, this law carries additional connotations, as a mage who does not have knowledge of himself does not have
knowledge (and therefore control) of his own magic. This law is one of the reasons "evil" mages are very rare-a dedication...

she was getting nowhere. I shared that I've always loved the twist on responsibility being nothing more than the ability to respond. It always felt so much
'lighter' seeing it from that perspective. Sometimes we get 'heavy' with our emotional attachments and forget we have a choice in how we
respond to things…you know people, situations, circumstances, and some tough decisions at times. I got to thinking about that and how at the center of it all

Three Master Teachers

Experience, for good or bad, is a Master Teacher of ethics and integrity that deserves to be honored. Master Teachers come to us masked in different guises;
in ways we are not always able to recognize at first. Sometimes they come forward as Shadow, or they are of Light, or Mottled within the Grey areas but they
come forward by way of Experience. I'd like to introduce three Master Teachers who often walk wearing masks.

From the Shadow Masters we learn the hard lessons that bring our own Contrary Medicine/s out into the Light. I'm going to address Shadow Teachers first
mainly because so many of us are taken into these experiences without warning….or at least when it's there we tend to dismiss it out of uncertainty or the
desire to see only what we want to see instead of the truth. Many individuals wonder what gifts a Shadow Teacher could possibly bring that would be of use.
Well, the fact is that because of them we learn about the...

It's an interesting concept to 'walk in a name' isn't it? I mean we take our given names, our nicknames, even our surnames and look into
their meanings, sometimes we find some very connective implications into our personalities and lineage, traits within the family, etc. but even there we tend
to brush them off. By brushing them off I mean we may commit those references to memory and if asked we could recite the meanings, but don't otherwise
really walk with them in our conscious awareness daily. I don't think most of us think about our names much. Oh, sure, we answer to them all day long, but
we don't think about how we represent that name consciously on a daily basis. I was talking with a friend about this not long ago and began to wonder to
myself, since that is something that I am conscious of, just how often is that the case with others? And why not somehow address that to the community here at

Energy weaving is an act we engage in consciously or unconsciously…I say this because it is our thoughts backed by
our intentions that set that energy into motion. If we focus on it we can direct it. However, if we think about things and do not focus the release of that

Many new seekers wonder why they need to practice exercises for their spiritual development. The truth is that while it would be nice to just flip some switch
and have all our abilities turn on functionally it doesn't quite work that way. Just as we physically exercise our bodies, we need to spiritually exercise
our abilities…both build muscles. First of all spiritual abilities may or may not be known to the individual, may or may not be under control, may or may not
open to them unless they know how to work with them. It is often haphazard experiences that trigger things and lead us into events we don't understand.
Taking a positive approach helps the individual avoid wrong turns, pulled mental hamstrings, or worse. Understanding that exercises are designed to help you do
things properly and gain control over your abilities (we all have them) it really is going to make a huge difference.

Walking With A Mentor

Over the years I have come to know the value of walking with someone who knows the way ahead. It makes such a huge difference. Personally, I've found that
those who were to teach me things came at times where the learning needed to be focused for a reason and they appeared when they were needed most. It's
important to understand that the person who crosses your path, or to whom you're led by Spirit and/or guidance, is always someone who saves you time and
effort in getting where you need to go. There's always a reason, something you need to prepare for on time. Like the Crow flies, they can take you from
point A to point B rather than some long and winding roadway that takes in all the sights and sounds of distraction (plenty of time for that later on your own
or for a joy ride together *S*). They help you stay focused until you 'get it' and then you just enjoy company and friendship together or if necessary
will part ways as...

Energy Signatures

Time and again we hear the term 'energy signature' and presume everyone knows what that is since it sounds pretty self explanatory. We assume others
know how to go about tracking them too but that's not always the case is it? To the individual just coming to understand energy and how we can work with it
there is going to be the proverbial question: "What is an energy signature?" and the proverbial hesitancy to ask a question wherein they might feel
foolish. While I believe any question that arises is valid I know how people tend to be shy about asking despite the continued encouragement within our
community to ask away. So let's look at that initial question, just what is an energy signature?

Well, we all know that energy, on the whole, is just that…energy. Everything that exists is comprised of it and depending on the various components of the
energy we know that different forms will physically manifest. We know that...
